The Run tool available in the Windows operating system
is one of the most important and useful tools, through which you can quickly
execute a lot of commands, and the Run window also allows you to easily run any
program available on your computer by just writing its name inside the window,
however You may not often be able to run programs with this ease depending on
the Run window.
The reason for this is that the window does not
support running all the programs installed on your device automatically, as
third-party programs will not be supported by default in the tool, in addition,
many programs for the operating system also will not work through the Run
window after writing the name of the program but what is the reason for that?
In this topic, we will get to know you in detail about how to run any program
on the computer by simply writing its name in the Run window, and this will
certainly provide you with speed and flexibility while using Windows 10 or 11.
How to run programs using Run in Windows
In order to run any program using the Run tool in
Windows 10 or Windows 11, you will simply need to enter the name of this
program in the window, then click on the Enter button, and the program will
open immediately, and this method will work with many applications, for example
for Run the calculator, type "Calc", and in order to run the Google
Chrome browser, type "Chrome", and in order to run the Registry
Editor, type regedit, and in order to run the Excel program, write Excel.
However, this method will not work with all programs
installed on your device, and here we are not only talking about third-party
programs, but even Microsoft programs may not work either, for example, write
Word and the Word program will not open for you, or write Edge and Microsoft
browser will not open for you Edge, the reason for this is that you will need
to enter a slightly different command depending on the name of the program's
EXE file.
You can find out this name by entering the system disk
(C:) and then opening the Programs Files folder. Here, search for the folder of
the program you want to run, then enter the folder in order to find out the
name of its EXE file, and this is the name that must be entered. In the Run
window, in order to run the program, for example, in order to run the Edge
browser, type “msedge” and not Edge, and in order to run PowerPoint, type
“powerpnt” and not Powerpoint, and in order to run the Word program, write
“Winword” and not Word, and so on for all programs other.
But what if you tried this method and you can't run
the program either? In this case, you will need to make some minor
modifications within the Registry Editor, and here is an explanation of this in
the following steps.
Run external programs through Run
First, enter the Registry Editor by typing the command
"regedit" in the Run window or by searching for it in the Start menu,
and then you will need to enter the following path in the Registry window:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths
After that, right-click on App Paths, then choose New,
then Key. Here you will need to enter the EXE file name of the program, which
you can get through the "Programs Files" folder, but it is important
that you enter the exact name of the program with its extension (.exe), for
example, Photoshop.exe and after entering the name of the program, click on Ok.
In the next step, click on the registry key that you
just added, such as (Photoshop.exe), then double-click on the Default option
that appears on the right in order to modify it. Here, enter the full path of
the program with the EXE extension also in the Value data field, for example :
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop\Photoshop.exe Then click on Ok.
After that, right-click again on the registry key that
you added, then choose New, then String Value, set the name to Path, then click
on Ok, and then double-click on the Path series that will appear on the right,
and here enter the path of the program Again, but without the exe extension this
time, for example, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop, then click OK.
Now all you have to do is restart your computer, and
then launch the Run window by clicking on the Windows button and the letter R
from the keyboard, then write the name of the program, for example,
Photoshop.exe, whether with or without the extension, and Windows will run the
program Immediately, of course, you will need to add each program separately to
the registry in order to be able to run it using the Run window.
