Several years ago today, phones came in a variety of designs, the vast majority of which shared a separate keyboard. After that, 3D screens technologies began to appear, and then the case settled on the flat-screen versions and smartphones without a keyboard. It seems that the designers chose to change the designs of smartphones from 2019 until now and in the future as well. There are many foldable smartphones available in the market for purchase by the average user and not as an experiment for professionals only. Thus, a new era in smartphone designs has begun, which is the era of "curved smartphones", whether the bend is horizontal or vertical. But I think there is plenty of time to avoid buying bendable phones, and by avoiding, I mean it, that is, I do not recommend buying these phones.
Below, we explain the reasons for not buying curved
phones now...
First: the layers of protection for large screens
Everyone encouraged the shift that took place in the
smartphone sector, in which the back surfaces of these devices were replaced
with glass instead of metal. Glass was able to provide a large area for the
practice of design creativity, and with this development, there are many types
of glass available with different layers of protection, such as generations of
Corning glass.
Glass is pretty cool and durable as an exterior
construct for smartphone designs, but phones are fixed faces. As for curved
smartphones, there is no doubt about the ability of glass to bend. So, all
foldable phones now have a plastic protective layer on their screen, not a
glass layer. This will affect the daily user experience in terms of scratches
that may appear on the phone screen, or even the presence of some dust between
the two layers of the phone during folding, which will affect the texture and
shape of the plastic layer.
Second: the vulnerability to breakage
Perhaps you think that one of the positive aspects of
the large screens in bendable smartphones is the presence of a screen with a
plastic protection layer, so at least the protective layer will not break when
the phone falls, right?! But what about the internal joints responsible for the
dynamics of opening and closing parts of the phone screen?! Wouldn't it be more
prone to breakdowns than other phones with flat screens?
Companies may announce a certain number of openings
and closings before their phone screens malfunction. However, what if your
usage exceeds this value? What if the phone supports 120,000 opening and
closing times, and you exceed this number due to the nature of your use?! What
if the phone breaks down?! And what is the value of repairing it?!
Third: Application support and updates
Why did you buy a new phone in the first place?!
Before spending a lot of money on a new phone, you should know why you want to
buy this phone and define your requirements very precisely. Do you want a
tablet screen in your pocket at all times?! Don't expect miracles from new
curved phones just because they are expensive. Developers involved in developing
applications compatible with the Android operating system suffer from the large
number and variety of devices that these applications are required to support.
So, we are back to the old problem that has always
been the reason behind the migration of many users to iPhone phones with the
iOS operating system, which is the lack of updated and equivalent applications
with their phones all the time and over the years. You will surely be amazed at
the experience of watching videos on large curved screen phones, but will you
live the rest of your life doing nothing but watching videos?!
Fourth, the designs are not very comfortable or seamless
The first marketing point for bendable devices is that
they can be converted into a tablet in a jiffy, right?! But you must remember
to answer another question, will you use the tablet feature all the time?! The
thickness of bendable smartphones is almost double that of the usual
smartphones, which is annoying.
Besides this, you will never be surprised by the
difference in battery performance of bendable smartphones. The difference will
be very small, which will make you always need to travel with a charger or an
external power bank, which is not comfortable at all, especially when
remembering the dimensions and weight of the bendable phone from the original.
Fifth: huge costs
Two years after their first appearance, bendable
smartphones are considered a new technology that is still in the stages of
development and improvement. It follows that there is not enough supply of
in-house parts and that there are not as many manufacturers to support these
technologies. There are several versions of only bendable smartphones. Its
price is still not appropriate, and too high. There are still clear and
explicit design flaws, but you will pay the phone in total for having a curved
smartphone from the phones of the future.
However, we do not deny the success of companies,
especially Samsung, in developing their own versions of bendable smartphones
over the course of two years. However, phones still have screens that are not
supported by layers of glass protection, and there are still many possibilities
for malfunctions in the internal joints between the two separate parts of the
phone. Remember those drawbacks when you're about to pay close to $2,000 for a
curved-screen smartphone. I absolutely do not advise you to take that step now.
